Farm Radio Weekly

Welcome to all!

First, we would like to welcome this week’s new subscribers: Godfrey Bakibinga from KBS FM, in Ouganda; Kizito Mushizu Nfndiko from Radio Maendeleo, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Mohamed Sankoh from Radio Mankeneh, in Sierra Leone, Paul Bisi King, from UNILAG FM 103.1, in Nigeria; Hamadou Boulama Tcherno, from Alternative Espaces Citoyens, in Niger; and Abdoulaye Mballo, from Radio Bamtaare, in Senegal.

May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity. This year, the theme of the day is “Biodiversity, Development and Poverty Alleviation.” Celebrations are planned in many countries around the world. Maybe you have planned a programme around the theme of biodiversity for this week. If so, do let us know at: farmradioweekly@farmradio.org.

You can find out more about the International Day for Biological Diversity at: http://www.cbd.int/idb/2010/.

Perhaps you will find inspiration in our story from Madagascar this week. This island off the coast of southeast Africa is well known as a biodiversity hotspot. The story tells how island women have been involved in recent agriculture and conservation projects.

Another of this week’s stories is about forest restoration. But this time the forests are in a floodplain in Mali. We hear about an interesting approach to income-generation and conservation called BioRights.

For those of you who have not yet discovered Skype, we introduce you to this communication tool in the Radio Resource Bank section. Finally, the Script of the Week discusses compost.

Happy reading!
