Zodiak Radio Malawi hosts Canadian intern
Date Posted: June 25th, 2012
Through our strategic partner organization, Farm Radio Malawi, Zodiak Radio has recently been hosting an intern from Canada. Jessica Campbell recently graduated from Carleton University’s journalism and political science programs in Ottawa, Canada. She arrived in Malawi in late April for an eight week internship with Zodiak Radio in Lilongwe (http://www.zodiakmalawi.com/). Her placement ends the last week of June.
While in Lilongwe, Jessica has been engaged in a variety of duties. She is an online editor at Zodiak radio. She works collaboratively with her coworkers covering stories, writing articles, and publishing them to the Zodiak Radio website. She also writes and edits scripts to air for the daily evening 6 p.m. radio show.
Although she has enjoyed applying her hands-on journalism skills in an African newsroom, Jessica has most enjoyed being an observer – watching media operate and impact the lives of people in Malawi. “My writing and radio skills aren’t necessarily what have grown,” says Jessica. “This experience has shaped my insights, opinions, morals, and values as a young reporter. I see the world more objectively now, and that is all that counts.”
Jessica has blogged about her observations as a journalist in Africa. After her placement she will travel to Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Europe before returning to Canada later this year. You can follow Jessica’s journey on her blog. Here are two agriculture-related stories from Jessica’s blog:
