Camels provide farmers in drylands with milk and income

In keeping with this week’s focus on the Maasai community, our script of the week tells how one Maasai farmer popularized camel milk and other camel products in a Maasai community in southern Kenya.

In the extreme droughts of 2000, many of the cattle owned by a Maasai community in Kenya died. This farmer realized the advantages of camels when water is in short supply – that camels can survive droughts by browsing on leaves other animals cannot eat, that they are resistant to most diseases, and that they can provide a reliable and consistent source of income and a nutritious food for the family and the community at a time when other food may be in short supply.
