Farm Radio Weekly

Maasai community speaks out

This special issue is the outcome of a Farm Radio Weekly writing and editing workshop held in Arusha, Tanzania, earlier this month. Our two Bureau Chiefs, Inoussa Maïga and Mark Ndipita, travelled to Arusha from Burkina Faso and Malawi, respectively. They were joined by Ahmed Bacar from the Comoros Islands, and Zenzele Ndebele from Zimbabwe, both of whom are regular contributors to Farm Radio Weekly.

Although we have worked together for some time now, it was the first time most of us had met face-to-face. We enjoyed discussing what elements are needed for a good story, how to find your story’s focus, and how to write (and pose!) relevant interview questions.

Read the results for yourselves in the two stories below, based on interviews conducted in Longido village, a Maasai community north of Arusha. Zenzele Ndebele’s story highlights cattle owners, and looks at how recent and proposed changes in the area may affect the future of the Maasai as pastoralists. Ahmed Bacar focused his story on how Raheli Philipo Kilaye has improved her life through attending adult education classes.

Many thanks to Emanuel Saakai and Tracey Sawyer from Testigo Africa for facilitating the visit. Read more about their activities in Longido at: http://www.testigoafrica.org/    Also,    visit our online photo album from the training/field day at this  address.

We hope you enjoy this special edition from Tanzania!
